Road Itinerary Plans

1Marrakech to Merzouga via the High Atlas & Ait Ben Haddou
Expand

Today we will depart Marrakech early, ideally by 7:30am, since this fast-paced three-day round trip covers considerable ground. Heading south in your private air-conditioned vehicle, we cross the High Atlas Mountains via the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka Pass, the highest major mountain pass in North Africa at 2,260 metres, winding through switchbacks with sweeping views over terraced Berber villages and mineral-rich rock formations, with a couple of short photo stops along the way. Descending the far side, we stop at Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed fortified ksar above the Ounila River and one of the best-preserved examples of pre-Saharan earthen architecture in the world, taking a brief guided walk through its narrow lanes. After a lunch stop in Ouarzazate, the 'Hollywood of Africa', we continue along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs and through the Dades Valley toward Tinghir and Todra Gorge, stopping for a short walk beneath its towering pink limestone cliffs, before pressing on to Merzouga as the afternoon light softens. Camel handlers meet us on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dune sea for an unforgettable 45-60 minute sunset trek across the dunes to our exclusive desert camp. Enjoy a traditional dinner cooked over an open fire, and later, gather around the campfire as Berber musicians play traditional drums under one of the most spectacular starscapes anywhere on Earth. Lunch today is usually a quick stop in Ouarzazate, keeping pace with this itinerary's fast, efficient schedule.

Driving Time: 9-10 hours total (including stops), plus 45-60 min camel trek
Distance: 560 km
Stay: Luxury Nomadic Desert Camp, Erg Chebbi Dunes
2Sahara Sunrise & a Free Day to Enjoy the Desert Camp
Expand

This morning offers the option to wake before dawn and climb a nearby dune in the dark to watch the sunrise transform the desert from soft pink to deep gold — a genuinely memorable start to the day, and one we highly recommend if you can manage the early start. Afterwards, enjoy a relaxed Berber breakfast at camp with time to simply take in the scenery before the desert heat builds. Given the long drive undertaken yesterday, today is deliberately unhurried: guests can relax at the camp, take a short optional excursion by 4x4 or quad bike further into the dunes (available locally for an additional cost), visit a nearby Berber family or small oasis village with your camel guide, or simply enjoy the camp's shaded common areas and swap stories with fellow travellers. As the second evening approaches, we repeat the magic of watching the sun set over the dunes before another traditional dinner and an evening of music around the campfire — many guests find that a second night in the desert, without yesterday's long drive, allows them to properly absorb the scale and silence of the Sahara. The relaxed pace of this second day, without a long drive to plan around, is genuinely one of the highlights many guests remember most.

Driving Time: Free day at the desert camp (optional 4x4/quad excursions available locally)
Distance: 0 km
Stay: Luxury Nomadic Desert Camp, Erg Chebbi Dunes
3Farewell to the Sahara & the Long Return to Marrakech
Expand

After a final Berber breakfast at camp, we say goodbye to our camel guides and drive back to Merzouga village by 4x4, where your main vehicle and driver await for the return journey to Marrakech. This is a long day of driving, retracing the route through Tinghir, the Dades Valley, and Ouarzazate, with your driver managing the pace to allow reasonable stops for lunch and stretching your legs — some guests prefer a brief second stop at a scenic viewpoint they missed on the way out, while others prefer to press on steadily. We cross the High Atlas once more via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass in the afternoon, with the palm groves surrounding Marrakech coming into view as the road descends toward the city. We arrive back in Marrakech in the early evening, where your trip concludes — if your flight departs later, we can arrange day-use facilities or a transfer directly to the airport; if you are staying an extra night, your driver will drop you at your riad or hotel. Over these three fast-paced days, you will have crossed the High Atlas Mountains, explored the UNESCO-listed kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, walked beneath the towering cliffs of Todra Gorge, and spent two unforgettable nights sleeping beneath the stars among the dunes of Erg Chebbi. On behalf of your driver and the entire Marokko Travel team, thank you for travelling with us on this fast-paced but genuinely memorable desert round trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this 3-day round trip too rushed to properly enjoy the desert?A: It's fast-paced by design for travelers short on time, but still delivers a full camel trek and night in the dunes; if you'd prefer a gentler pace, our 4 or 5-day versions add breathing room.
Q: How early do we leave Marrakech and how late do we return on day 3?A: We typically depart early morning on day 1 and return to Marrakech by evening on day 3, so plan your onward travel for day 3 evening or later.
Q: Is sandboarding available at the dunes?A: Yes, it can usually be arranged informally with camp staff for a small fee, though it isn't a guaranteed included activity.
Q: Do we take the same road back as we came?A: Yes, this round-trip route retraces the Tizi n'Tichka pass both ways, which also means you get a second look at the High Atlas scenery in different light.
