5-Day Desert Trip from Fes to Merzouga

Today we will depart Fes at a relaxed pace, ideally by 8:30am, since this is the most immersive Fes-only desert journey we offer, with extra time built in throughout. The road climbs into the Middle Atlas, and within an hour the plains around Fes give way to pine and cedar forest. Our first stop is Ifrane, a curious alpine-style town built by the French in the 1930s, before continuing to the Azrou Cedar Forest, home to some of the largest Atlas cedars in the world, some over 800 years old, and a resident troop of wild Barbary macaques — your driver stops here for a proper thirty to forty minutes so you can walk among the ancient trees at an unhurried pace. Continuing south, we stop in Midelt for a leisurely lunch before entering the dramatic Ziz Gorges and then the Ziz Valley itself, a ribbon of palm groves and mudbrick ksour villages winding through an otherwise barren, rocky landscape. Rather than rushing through, we take extra time here — a proper stop at a scenic viewpoint over the valley, and time to visit a small roadside date cooperative if the season allows — before continuing to Merzouga, where camel handlers meet us for a sunset trek across the dunes to our exclusive desert camp, followed by a traditional dinner and an evening of Berber music around the campfire beneath one of the most spectacular starscapes anywhere on Earth. Lunch in Midelt today is taken at a more relaxed pace than usual, in keeping with this itinerary's deliberately unhurried design.

This morning offers the option to wake before dawn and climb a nearby dune in the dark to watch the sunrise transform the desert from soft pink to deep gold. Afterwards, enjoy a relaxed Berber breakfast at camp. With two full days built into this itinerary specifically for travellers who want to properly slow down in the Sahara, today is entirely unhurried: optional activities can be arranged locally, including a visit to a nearby Berber family for tea and conversation about desert life, a short 4x4 excursion into the black volcanic hamada plains beyond the dune sea, or a stop at Khamlia village to hear traditional Gnaoua music performed by descendants of West African migrants. As the evening approaches, we again watch the sun set over the dunes before another traditional dinner and a further night of music and stars. Lunch is typically enjoyed back at camp, a relaxed midday break in the middle of this first fully free desert day.

Today offers a genuinely rare luxury for a desert trip: a second entirely free day at the camp, with no driving at all. Many guests use this day to simply slow down completely — reading in the shade, walking the dunes at your own pace away from the busier viewpoints, or taking a longer 4x4 excursion to explore the quieter southern reaches of Erg Chebbi. Others choose this day for a deeper cultural experience, spending time with a local Berber family, learning about traditional bread-baking in a sand oven, or trying your hand at basic Tamazight (Berber) phrases with your camp hosts. As with the previous evening, sunset over the dunes is followed by dinner and music around the fire — by this point, most guests report that the pace of the desert has genuinely settled into them, a noticeably different feeling from a rushed one-night visit. Lunch today follows the same relaxed rhythm as the previous day, taken at camp with no fixed schedule to keep to.

After a final Berber breakfast at camp, we say goodbye to our camel guides and drive back to Merzouga village by 4x4, where your driver awaits. We retrace the Ziz Valley road back toward the Middle Atlas, with a final look at this striking palm-and-ksour landscape, before continuing to Midelt, a former mining town and gateway between the High and Middle Atlas ranges, for an overnight stop that breaks up the return journey. Lunch en route to Midelt is usually a simple stop along the Ziz Valley road, a scenic, familiar sight by this point in the journey.

After breakfast, we complete the journey back to Fes, retracing the Middle Atlas route through Azrou and Ifrane, with the option of a final stop in the cedar forest for one last chance to see the Barbary macaques. We arrive back in Fes by the early-to-mid afternoon.
